She only keeps her quiet facade because she wants to keep others at a distance, and she believes that she can do this by keeping them from learning about her.
Background: In the ancient city of Roma, on the day known as Ides Marciae, A. Valeria Corvina Curiana, born M'. (Mania) Lucretia Curia, was born to perfectly human parents and lived a perfectly human life...for about five years. At that point, the vampire A. (Aulus) Valerius Corvinus killed her family. His bride, who desperately wished for a child, begged him to spare young Lucretia's life. This he did, reluctantly, as well as adopting, reluctantly, the child as his daughter. Through Roman tradition, the child gained his name {in female form} and kept the cognomen of her former family.
Valeria was never the dutiful daughter her "mother" wished her to become. She despised A. Corvinus, and not unwantedly. He was cruel to the child, oftentimes banishing her from his presence simply because she looked at him at the wrong moment. Valeria's hatred would grow to rebellion in her fifteenth year, when she tricked her "brother," B. (Brutus) Valerius Corvinus into turning her into a vampire. This caused their "father" to respond violently, forcing Valeria and Brutus to marry. They were married for approximately a thousand years before Valeria finally got around to killing her first husband, an act which would become something of a habit in future marriages once the men ceased to amuse her.
She went through a series of marriages after Brutus' death in 745 BCE, all of them ending with either the "suspicious death" or "strange disappearance" of the husband. After her last marriage, it occurred to her that what she wanted was not committment, but a "tryst." She wanted to be someone's lover, not a wife. {Strange that it took her several millenia to figure this out...} This, unfortunately, led her to the life of a (if you'll excuse the pun) lady of the night.
Somewhere along the line, she met a nice young woman in a habit, who convinced her to come to a nunnery. The nun wanted to save this "poor soul" from her "sinful life," and her earnest efforts amused Valeria. Once at the nunnery, the vampire assumed her current personality, quickly charming the other nuns. However, this peaceful life was short-lived, as it was soon discovered that Valeria had seduced one of the Sisters, and they were both expelled from the nunnery.
After her stint as a nun, Valeria started to steal from people. She didn't really need food, but those jewel-adorned necks were quite tempting to her...and not just for the blood. She kept this up until she got her first computer. At that point, she took her sly ways to the internet and started stealing identities instead of jewelry. In 2004, she found out that there was a university looking for a Latin professor. This prompted her to forge a fake identity and a PhD in Ancient Civilizations...specializing, of course, in Roman history.
Somehow, her criminal history has escaped the attention of about every single law enforcement agency in the world...though I wouldn't put it past her to have burned every physical record and erase every computerized file she's come across along the way.
Other: She has two tattoos.
At the nape of her neck
and
On the small of her back
