Personality: Azumi's personality has been summarized by those who know her as 'angelic.' She is gentle, kind and patient, and very little can shatter her serenity. Aspiring to be kind to everyone, regardless of personal prejudice, the most she feels for her enemies is pity at the fact that they cannot be better people.
Some might think that her almost limitless patience would make her a bit of a pushover, but this is far from accurate. A hard worker and single mother, Azumi will not tolerate any threat to her family or the Academy that has been the only true home she ever knew. She may be angelic, but she is still a territorial lioness.
Background:Born in captivity, Azumi never had a chance at a normal life. Used in experiments from a very young age, she grew to despise science and all those who practice it. Shortly after her tenth birthday, the prison in which she had grown up was shut down by allies of the Alculard family, and Azumi and her family were freed. Unfortunately for the girl, her parents had grown crazed and nearly killed her in their frenzy.
Left alone with no other place to go, Azumi found her way to Alculard Academy, where she found refuge. For the first year or two, she found it difficult to be around others, being used to the cruelties of both humans and non-humans. However, the kindness shown to her by the former Academy Headmaster and his family slowly began to ease her fears, and she began to look for the small kindnesses that she had never seemed to notice before.
Over the next five years, she grew more and more attached to her new home, learning to love the people there as though they were the family she'd never truly had. Her kind demeanor and talent for music made her popular among her peers in both Day and Night classes. Beyond that, she fell in love with a young jaguar shifter in her class. She graduated pregnant, and she couldn't have been happier. She vowed to be better than her parents had been, to show her unborn child the love she had never known.
Unfortunately, her pregnancy prevented her from continuing her education, and she moved into a small apartment in the city to raise her son, Nemo, alone, since his father's family threatened to disown the jaguar for his "tryst" with a penniless orphan. Her head held high, Azumi did her best and refused to let her position pull her down to the oblivion she had once lived through. Offerring voice, piano and violin lessons to those who wished to learn, waitressing in a nearby cafe and babysitting for a well-off family in the area, she managed to pay for both her rent and her son's daycare for ten years before her life again took a turn for the worse.
The patriarch of the family she babysat for found out she was a shifter and blackmailed her. His pharmaceuticals company was going bankrupt because he hadn't gotten involved in the experiments that so many other companies relied on...experiments that involved the use of nonhumans. It was either Azumi or Nemo, and she would not allow her son to be abused like that. She struck a deal with him: if he would personally ensure her son's safety and get the boy into Alculard Academy, she would go peacefully.
He refused and went to the police, charging her with child abuse. (He had seen Nemo a few times in the past, and the boy's almost constant state of injury gave him more than enough fuel for the charges.) Testifying that he had personally witnessed the woman strike her son on several occassions, he watched in satisfaction as she was thrown into the prison he'd bribed the judge to choose.
Again imprisoned and experimented on, Azumi withdrew into herself. Constantly heard singing soft lullabies, she was thought to be somewhat insane by her captors. In reality, she was simply trying not to forget the life she had outside the Hell she was currently going through. The highlight of her life at this point was the fact that, although she expected to be completely isolated, her son's caseworker allowed her to correspond with her son on a regular basis, so long as she didn't reveal anything about what was happening to her. What she was unaware of was the fact that the man who had put her in prison became her son's first foster father...and that her son's new friend nearly killed the man.
Almost eight years later, an attorney came to her cell and told her simply, "The Alculard family has hired me to appeal your case." She was surprised, but she welcomed the news with a calm smile. During the course of her appeals, she learned that it was her son's applicant letter to the Academy that had spurred the Headmaster and his cousins to take action on her case. Reading the letter, she cried for the first time in her life. She had never known how much her son looked up to her until that point.
She has returned to the Academy in the position of music instructor.
Effects of Experimentation on family and self:
mosaic genetics of unclear origin
abnormally high metabolism
sudden bursts of inhuman strength
bloodlust
slight healing ability
"swirling" eyes
Some traits are Vampiric, some are Demonic. The eyes are most likely the result of gene manipulation. These traits have been passed down to Nemo.
