Character Personality:To everyone Haku is seen as a loner. He has a dark aura that usually keeps others away, and prefers to do everything on his own. He is often thought to be angry all the time, even when if there is no facial expression to prove this fact, but this is often not true. Haku does, however, have a very short temper, that doesn’t take much to set it off. He is very intelligent for his age, and gets highly irritated when people base his intelligence on his age instead of his past accomplishments. He is also strongly claustrophobic.
Contrary to popular belief, Haku does have a soft side. He is extremely protective of those he truly cares for, and will anything to make sure that they are not hurt in any way shape, or form. The only person who has ever seen the other side of him is his younger brother, Lorin.
Character’s Background:As far back as he could remember it was always his mother. No father, but endless men that came and went as did she. At first Haku was bothered by this, but by a very young age he learned that the only person you could really count on was yourself. He had gotten used to her coming and going, to her hate filled words, to the drinking, beatings and sex. As he grew from a toddler to a young child, he had stopped trying to avoid the beatings and the rapes, knowing that he couldn’t stop her and that they would only be worse if he resisted. He learned to stop trusting everyone, becoming a cold, distant child who was “perfectly polite” whenever he was in the company of the men and women whom his mother entertained. But as time passed the get-togethers’ got smaller and smaller and Haku learned to avoid them at all costs. To become invisible as if he wasn’t there. But everything changed when his younger brother came along.
Haku had just turned 7 when Lorin was born, and he vowed that he would protect his baby brother and keep him safe from Kimiko by any means necessary. Because they were often left alone, Haku and Lorin became extremely close, having no one else to turn to. Haku had stopped attending his classes due to the fear of leaving Lorin alone for the long school days, but he studied the books that he had gotten at the beginning of the year, teaching himself while he looked after his brother. Lorin was especially fond of the medical chapters, chapters that dealt with the body and how to heal it, and was often the one to help bandage his brother once he was old enough to comprehend it. During the long nights, Lorin would sneak into Haku’s room, not wanting to sleep alone, and Haku simply didn’t have the heart to turning him away. Because of this, they usually slept in the twin bed that Haku had been given, both catching what little sleep they could through the fear of their mother finding them and the sounds that often echoed through out the house.
When Haku was 9, their mother began to disappear for long times on end, and it was only through begging his mother’s agent that Haku got access to her bank account to buy food for him and his brother. His mother never actually checked her balance on a regular basis, but Haku didn’t want to temp fate by taking more then what he absolutely needed. Because of this he learned to cook exceptionally well extremely quickly. He tried to plan his shopping trips to last from the moment their mother left until the moment she returned so that she never noticed the fact that her sons were spending her money.
At age 10, his luck ran out, however when his mother had unexpectedly come home one night, even more drunk then he had ever seen her. She had kept going on about “Genji’s death” and how his child had stolen everything from her. As usual, she beat him, but before he knew what was happening, Kimiko had gotten a hold of a small dagger and had Lorin cornered. Just as she was about to strike him, Haku jumped in the way of the her hand, the blade making a clean, deep gash that traveled across his face. Haku doesn’t remember too much after that. He remembered waking up in the hospital, being asked questions by social workers about how he had gotten the wound. His mother (afraid to tarnish her diminishing reputation, had told the police and social workers that the boys had been playing with knives. Being too afraid of what she might do if he were to speak against her, Haku agreed with her lie, telling a story of how he had gotten the wound. Because he had told it so well, the police and workers all left, and Haku returned to the hell from which there was no escape.
Once Lorin was old enough to enter school, Haku returned to his schooling as well, and his teachers found that he was able to continue his education with kids his own age from all the studying he had done at home. He excelled quickly, not finding even the most difficult courses all that challenging, and he graduated High school with honors. Deciding to get a job while going onto college, he began to study for a degree in engineering, finding that to be the only subject that held his interest. He continued to watch over his brother, but the abuse lessened, now that he was actually able to defend himself against the woman who threatened both him and his brother.
Saving all of his money, Haku swore to take Lorin and run away as soon as he had enough money to afford an apartment and everything they would need to move out, the date was set to be immediately after Lorin’s 16th birthday.
The plan never happened however. Just two weeks before Lorin’s 16th birthday Kimiko had managed to steal Lorin away, taking him on a drive while she was drunk. Haku had later found out through the police reports that she had hit a car head on, and although she would pull through with minor cuts and bruises, Lorin as well as the couple that had been in the other car, had died instantly. The impact of the car had completely crushed Lorin from the waist down.
Haku fell into a deep depression in the weeks that followed, blaming his mother, but also blaming the Alculards because it was they who had turned his mother into this………
thing. Wanting revenge, he researched out where Kousei Alculard (the only other name his mother had mentioned besides Genji) was located and headed towards the school to track down the half brother he had never met.
